A hedonist is someone who actively pursues pleasure. In a sense, we’re all hedonists, for even Mother Teresa made the sacrifices she made because ultimately she calculated that was how to maximize her own pleasure. A more precise title for this article would be: “Ten Reasons to be a Conscious Hedonist”.

1. Joy and Happiness.

This is almost truth by definition, but people who go out and try to be happy will generally succeed. :)

2. Health.

Being happy is better for your body, your mind, and your soul. :)

3. Be More Attractive.

When you love fun, you attract fun-loving people. Otherwise, you attract non-fun-loving people, which is pretty pointless because those people aren’t going to hang out with you anyway, they’re too busy avoiding fun ;)

4. Contribute to Civilization.

It is leisure and pleasure which create and add to civilization. Exhausting work and misery are the exact opposite. If humankind today underwent a weird mutation which made everyone feel pleasure from manually hammering nails into boards, then historians a hundred years from now would refer to the early 21st century as “The Dark Age Struggle Against Nailguns”. ;)

5. An Excellent Guide.

The human body has a wonderfully intricate radar for detecting what’s good for us: if something’s good for us, it’ll make us happy. Those who don’t pursue happiness, are letting this amazing feature go to waste. ;)

6. Be A More Interesting Person.

The quest to feel good will take you to exotic new places and make you experience wonderful new things. When the dust clears, you’ll have way better stories to tell than if you’d just moped around aimlessly. ;)

7. View Reality More Realistically.

Whatever you do, whether you’re a hedonist or a priest, you’re ultimately doing to gain pleasure and avoid pain. Even when you make tremendous personal sacrifice, deep down you’re doing that because you calculate it’s the best path to maximized pleasure. When you make this quest for pleasure a conscious and deliberate one, you’ll have a better understanding of your own self, your own motives and purposes. :)

8. No More Having To Say No.

Is there anything you always secretly wanted to do, but were too concerned about how it would effect your other goals (job, family, religion)? The hedonist realizes that every goal in life shares one unifying goal: happiness. He no longer has to say no to the wonderful experiences he always secretly wanted :)

9. Be More Effective And Successful.

All our endeavors in this life are really bent around maximizing joy and minimizing anguish. Once you consciously acknowledge this, you’ll experience greater success and effectiveness in everything you do. Nobody in history achieved greatness by miserably slogging through chores and tasks ;)

10. Hedonism is Generosity.

So you want to be generous? You call yourself a lightworker? You want to leave a positive footprint on the universe? Verily I say unto you, you can only make other people happy by being happy yourself. Joy is not a zero-sum game. It spreads and multiplies. Stop hoarding all that beautiful joy, open your heart, light up the world with your smile! :D
