Blogger Static Frontpage Generator
Blogspot doesn’t provide any way to get a static frontpage. I figured out a way to do it by editing the template. Of course, now that I’ve moved to Wordpress where this feature is built-in, I no longer have to use my own trick. But I figure it’ll be useful to anyone who still uses Blogger and wants a fixed, static frontpage.
There’s another way to get a pseudo-homepage, which involves writing it as a regular post, publishing it, and setting the date to some time in the distant future. This, however, requires that you change the posts-per-page setting to 1, which you might not want to do (for example, it’ll screw up all your category pages). The only way to get a true static frontpage in Blogspot is to edit the template. That can be rather difficult… which is why I created this generator, which does all the work for you. Just paste your template into the first box (make sure you check “Expand Widget Templates”), then paste your desired frontpage into the 2nd box, press the button, and you get a template for your static homepage
This trick was a real life-saver to me when I figured it out. Before, every time I’d write an article, I’d think, “Hmmm, is this the very first thing I want visitors to see when they come to Xamuel.com??” The worst was when I’d write an article that didn’t really fit the overall theme of the website, and then go on hiatus for awhile, so that for a long time that off-topic post was slapped up like it was the most important thing on the site! Another problem is, the default blogspot behavior, which is just to spam the homepage with the latest N posts, effectively duplicates those posts, penalizing them in any search engine which looks down on duplicate content.
The usual boilerplate applies: make sure you backup your template before using the generator. If you run into any problems, please let me know via the “contact” button to the right. May the blogforce be with you
